Actually I've just had a thought - what if 9/11 was the 'mother of terrorist attacks', a climax of terrorism activities that appears to have started with the 1996 Khobar Towers Bombing [1]?
And what if the purpose of all of these was simply to drag USA into 'endless conflict' in both Afghanistan and Iraq? Strangely enough at NO POINT did ANY GROUP publicly admit responsibility for all these atrocities (even Bin Laden refused responsibility for 9/11 [2], which is quite strange if he wanted to drag USA into Afghanistan and Iraq).
It's also worth noting that post 9/11, there hasn't been a single attack on US assets ANYWHERE [outside the areas of immediate conflict] , as though 9/11 was meant to be remembered as the 'Mother of Terrorist Attacks'.
That would explain 9/11, but it still doesn't explain what event lead to the attacks in the first place.
Actually there's something else I don't understand. Surely US Navy Warships contain the most sophisticated radar in the world - then how did a terrorist successfully slam a boat packed with explosives into the USS Cole? Do terrorist boats come fully equipped with stealth capability?

There are a lot of unanswered questions about 9/11. I doubt we will ever have concrete proof about what really happened that day.
What is known is that there was an explosion in the basement of WTC2 before the first plane hit. The janitor who worked there has been telling this story to whoever would listen, but was not recorded in the official 9/11 report. The explosion was corroborated by a seismic even recorded at a USGS site outside of NYC and a recording of a conference call occurring at the time of the explosion. Any NYFD person at the scene will tell you that there were small explosions happening all over the WTC1 and WTC2. A survivor from WTC7 said there was an explosion inside that building before WTC1 or WTC2 came down. By the way, WTC7 collapse isn't even mentioned in the official 9/11 report.
A New Hampshire newspaper on September 12th quoted an air traffic controller from Boston Center (in Nashua NH) stating there was an F16 on the tail of flight 93 before it went down.
Zbignew Brzezinski's book, "The Grand Chessboard" provides an economic case for the US going into Central Asia, but also states that an attack the scale of a "Pearl Harbor" would be required to get the US public behind such a military operation.
Long story short, the only person fired after 9/11 was TV host Bill Mahr. No one in the US Government was ever held accountable. There are a lot of people in the building and engineering trades, pilots, and former government officials that state severe doubts about the official 9/11 story.
If 9/11 wasn't planned in a cave in Afghanistan, the people who did plan and execute it had to have been very powerful. Powerful enough to take care of any lose ends, suppress the response of US air defense, and control the production of the official record.
There are not only many questions about 9-11 but huge quantities of facts that the government and mainstream media ridicule and refuse to deal with in any way. The fix is in, and no answers will ever be forthcoming unless enough people learn the available facts and realize that the official story is a fabric of lies. A few million strident voices DEMANDING answers would possibly change things. I doubt that this will happen. The people who are behind these sorts of things have mastered the "big lie," and the people are too ignorant, stupid and distracted by sports, reality TV and other such crap that it is just too much bother for them to be serious about a huge conspiracy.
As for the USS Cole, her radar was probably off because she was in port, moored to a pier. It didn't matter anyway, because the people who drove a boat alongside and exploded it came up in broad daylight in view of any crew members who looked their way.
